Thoughts on Black History Month 2022

February is Black History Month, a time to acknowledge and appreciate the central role Black Americans have played in U.S. history. At OutFront, we are taking time to reflect on the historic struggle for racial justice. We are also using this occasion to recognize Black LGBTQ+ individuals who are making history.

People like Janetta Johnson, Curtis Lipscomb, and Melanie Willingham-Jaggers are making strides and changes for good. Please watch our social media this month for their profiles and more.

But as we celebrate these history-makers, we also remember that major disparities exist in our country, and the fight for racial justice must be advanced. Here in southwest Michigan, we still see countless examples of racial discrimination in housing, health care, education, and employment. And yes, we also acknowledge the ways in which our own LGBTQ+ community still struggles with racism.

So, this month OutFront reaffirms our intention to stand in solidarity with all who continue to fight for racial justice and equality. We must speak out when hate, violence, and systemic racism impacts Black lives. We must also find new ways to work together to strengthen coalitions and build networks that will meaningfully address race and racism.

I invite you to join us on this journey. So, please take a moment and follow this link to make sure we can stay in touch.

In solidarity,

Amy Hunter, Executive Director
