KALAMAZOO, MI June 24, 2022 – OutFront Kalamazoo is appalled at the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to dismantle 50 years of precedent by overturning Roe vs. Wade.
Reproductive healthcare is critical to the LGBTQ+ community. Access to safe and legal abortion is healthcare. Today’s opinion will cause undue harm to our community. Regardless of one’s gender identity and sexual orientation, everyone deserves high-quality, compassionate reproductive healthcare. The burden of this decision will most assuredly fall on our most vulnerable communities.
“We must remain vigilant and keep a watchful eye on this Court and those we elect to represent us in public office,” said OutFront’s interim Executive Director, Tracy Hall. “The future ramifications of today’s decision by the activist Justices will be far-reaching and will impact our community for years to come.”
While Michigan does have a trigger law on its books from 1931, the ACLU of Michigan obtained a court injunction preventing the 1931 law from taking effect. OutFront Kalamazoo is even more committed to working with our partners in Kalamazoo and across the State, to ensure that access to abortion in Michigan remains legal.
This was another wake-up call that voting and elections matter and why we must not miss any opportunity to cast our ballot. “Days like today remind me of how important our vote is,” stated OutFront’s Director of Programs, Michael Cleggs. “If they were so quick to attack a woman's right to control their own body, I can only imagine what they will go for next.”
