Legacy House
What is Legacy House?
Legacy House is a six-bed transitional housing facility serving queer-identifying youth ages 18-24 who are actively experiencing homelessness. Legacy House is a branch of the OutProud Safe Program at OutFront Kalamazoo, a multi-faceted initiative to combat the issue of queer homelessness in Kalamazoo County. Legacy House operations and programming strive to be evidence-based, trauma-informed, and equity-focused.
How It Works
Phase 1: Application
When there is an opening at Legacy House, a link to the application will be posted on this page and will remain open for at least two weeks.
Phase 2: Prescreening
All applications are prescreened for basic eligibility criteria, including a verification process to ensure that the applicant is currently receiving services with case management that includes housing navigation. Applicants who are in need of housing navigation services will be connected to OutFront Kalamazoo's in-house provider. Once an applicant has been determined to meet all of the basic eligibility criteria, an interview will be scheduled.
Phase 3: Interview
The interview process allows the Housing Team to determine whether the needs of the applicant are within the scope of what Legacy House is built to provide, and to learn more about the applicant as an individual to determine the likelihood of a positive interpersonal experience with the current residents of Legacy House.
Phase 4: Consideration/Determination
Once interviews with all eligible applicants have concluded, the Housing Team will meet and determine which applicant is best suited to fill the current opening. This individual will be extended an offer of residency. All others will be informed that the spot has been filled and are encouraged to continue working with their Housing Navigation provider to pursue other housing opportunities.
Phase 5: Intake
The applicant to whom residency was extended must begin the intake process within seven days of the initial offer. The spot will not be held longer than 5 business days, at which point the offer will be considered forfeit and will be extended to the next most eligible applicant.
