Black History Month

February is Black History Month, an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. The theme for this year’s observance is “Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity” so OutFront Kalamazoo has decided to mark the month by recognizing Black LGBTQ+ individuals who are making history. Throughout the month we will be sharing images here and across our social media platforms to help raise awareness about the significant contribution being made by Black LGBTQ+ individuals. Each image that appears on this page throughout the month will link to the individuals Wikipedia page. Please help amplify this celebration by sharing our links on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

As we celebrate these history-makers, we also acknowledge the challenges many Black LGBTQ+ individuals face in the United States, and in our own communities. A new report from The Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law provides data on the 1.2 million adults in the US who self-identify as Black and LGBTQ+. It reveals Black LGBTQ+ people fare worse than their non-LGBTQ+ counterparts in many measures of economic and social vulnerability. https://bit.ly/3oIykix
