Breaking: ELCRA Amendment Introduced in Michigan

Today, January 12th, 2023, on the opening day of the 102nd Michigan Legislature, lawmakers have introduced an amendment to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include protections for LGBTQ+ people.

Michigan's LGBTQ+ community has been fighting for this amendment for over 40 years. Our work through #HateWontWin to elect a pro-equality majority in Michigan last November demonstrated to lawmakers that discrimination has no home in our state. We call upon the legislature to move forward in a bipartisan manner by taking swift action.

STATEMENT FROM OUTFRONT KALAMAZOO: On the first day of the 102nd Legislature, Legislators introduced an amendment to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity. OutFront Kalamazoo applauds and thanks lawmakers for introducing legislation that will amend the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination against LGBTQ+ Michiganders in employment, housing, public accommodations, and education. Sexual orientation and gender identity will finally be protected classes once signed into law.

This is long overdue. We are grateful to those who have been working tirelessly for years on amending Elliot-Larsen. No one should have to worry about getting fired or being denied housing for who they are and who they love.

Thank you to the voters in the city of Kalamazoo who voted in 2009 to add sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression to the City’s nondiscrimination clause, and thank you to the City of Portage, Kalamazoo Township, and Oshtemo Township for adding these protections too. Every municipality that worked to add these protections to their non-discrimination clauses has been vital in our work to make this great state a safer and more inclusive place for LGBTQ+ families. #AlwaysOutFront
