#DecisionDay2020 Virtual Panel to Discuss Landmark Supreme Court Decision
Michigan transgender activist Aimee Stephens (who died last month) outside of the U.S. Supreme Court last October as the court held oral arguments in her case and two others that dealt with workplace discrimination.
The network of Michigan’s LGBTQ+ Community Centers has scheduled a virtual panel discussion this Thursday, June 18, 2020, from 6pm to 8pm to discuss yesterday’s landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision ruling that a longstanding federal law barring workplace discrimination protects LGBTQ+ employees.
The ruling in favor of LGBTQ+ rights came as a surprise to many following the Trump administration’s move last week to erase protections for transgender patients against discrimination by doctors, hospitals and health insurance companies.
The implications of the Supreme Court’s decision could touch the lives and livelihoods of more Americans than any LGBTQ+ rights decision by the court so far. At this historic moment, it is important to pause and consider the full scope of this legal victory. The agenda will include:
Welcome - Dave Garcia of Affirmations
Opening Remarks - Erin Knott of Equality Michigan
Panel Discussion -
Jay Kaplan of the ACLU of Michigan
Curtis Lipscomb of LGBT Detroit
Amy Hunter of OutFront Kalamazoo
Amritha Venkataraman of Human Rights Campaign Michigan
There will be time for Q&A following the panel. Please use this link to attend. For questions, please email info@goaffirmations.org or call 248-398-7105.
