Community need for gender-affirming support

A newly launched fund to support Kalamazooans seeking gender-affirming care and procedures has seen a high level of demand. OutFront Kalamazoo announced that it received more than 60 applicants for its Gender-Affirming Support Fund before the May 1 deadline. The fund was built entirely from community donations, including a matching offer from local donors. It raised more than $26,000 before the first application cycle opened. The organization set aside $10,000 for this first round, which will support 18 of the eligible applicants.

The fund is designed to support a range of gender-affirming expenses. Coverage can include transportation to and from doctor’s appointments, voice training, prostheses, medical tattooing, and help with rent or bills during recovery from procedures. Even in Michigan, where legal protections remain in place for transgender and intersex individuals, accessing gender-affirming care can be difficult because many services are not covered by insurance, providers are limited, and the nearest care can require long travel and time off work. Federal actions under the Trump administration, which have led to funding losses for LGBTQ+ programs and reports of providers pausing care, have contributed to uncertainty for those seeking it.

OutFront committee member Xiaoyi Zeng-Covell said gender-affirming support may also include things like moving expenses for those who are fleeing states with stricter regulations on health care for trans people. “We don’t necessarily have the reach that some of those larger organizations nationally do, but what we can do is love and support the community that is immediately accessible to us,” Zeng-Covell said.

Funds are expected to be distributed by the end of June, and OutFront plans to reopen applications in October for a second cycle of support. Zeng-Covell said the first cycle made it clear that the need for gender-affirming support is far greater than what the fund can currently meet, but they hope to continue raising funds to do more.
