SAGE Metro Detroit: Book Release of “Private Love, Public School – Gay Teacher Under Fire”

Join SAGE Metro Detroit this week for a discussion with author Christine A. Yared as she discusses her new book, Private Love, Public School - Gay Teacher Under Fire. The book recounts the story of former high school teacher Gerry Crane and the effect his experience had on LGBTQ+ people, including students at the school.

Twenty-five years ago, Byron Center Schools, located in Michigan, declared that homosexuals “do not constitute proper role models as teachers.” The school board issued this statement after its talented high school music teacher, Crane, was outed as being gay. Seven months later Crane was forced to resign. Gerry’s story was one of most vicious examples of LGBTQ+-related employment discrimination in the state.

SAGE Metro Detroit offers these virtual socials for LGBTQ+ and same-gender loving older adults every Thursday from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. EST on the Zoom platform. Register Here
