A reception to celebrate Maya James: Faces: Pt. III will be held at the OutFront Office on Saturday, July 23rd from 1-3 pm. Faces: Pt. III as described by Maya James: Faces: Pt. III is an exercise in loving my queerness, giving the respect my queer community deserves by coming out publicly, and celebrating the diversity and history of thirty queer people from all backgrounds (one queer person for every day of Pride month). Some of the subjects will be from Michigan, some from our greater Kalamazoo area, and QTBIPOC members of the queer community worldwide who cannot be here to celebrate with us today. While I have painted QTBIPOC, members of the queer community, and historical figures who have uplifted queer, gay, lesbian, and trans people, my work has never honed in on queer black faces and queer black people in the format which they deserve. Faces Pt. III is an apology for every time I thought of erasing myself and my community in the form of a collection of portraits released one day at a time every day of the month of June to celebrate members of the QTBIPOC community. Join us Saturday, July 23rd from 1-3 pm for a small reception for this work and a talkback with some of the subjects and the artist themselves.
