Grief Circle

  • OutFront Kalamazoo 340 South Rose Street Kalamazoo, MI, 49007 United States (map)

Our revised LGBTQIA+ Grief Circle is a grief group for members of the LGBTQIA+ community ages 18+ impacted by all forms of loss including estrangement, ended relationships, and death. This group meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM at the OutFront office.

The topic of January’s meeting will be Disenfranchised Grief. Sometimes, grief can feel even harder when it’s not really recognized or supported by society. Disenfranchised grief happens when others don’t validate our loss or the way we’re grieving. This might happen when society tells us we don’t have the “right” or “need” to grieve, or that our loss doesn’t count. Some examples of disenfranchised grief include the loss of a same-sex partner, the death of an ex-spouse or co-worker, losing a pet, suicide, death due to addiction or illness, miscarriage or abortion, a loved one being incarcerated, or family estrangement—just to name a few.
